Can I Use Fire Glass In Wood Or Propane Burning Features?

Fire Glass SafetyIf your fire feature (fire pit, bowl, fireplace, urn, or table) is fueled by natural gas, you can use fire glass as a decorative embellishment. However, wood burning fireplaces and fire pits, as well as most propane fueled features, cannot be used with fire glass or ceramic stones. Fireside Expressions is adamant about this for the safety of our valued customers.

Here's the scoop:
  • WOOD: Due to the fact that wood burns at much higher temperatures than natural gas, the fire glass cannot tolerate this extreme heat and would be subject to explosion, which will inevitably cause personal injury and property damage.
    • We recommend burning natural wood only.

  • PROPANE: Because propane is heavier than natural gas, it will sink to the bottom of your feature. Fire glass will not allow propane to circulate, and this could can lead to explosion of this particular media. Even with larger fire glass pieces, there is still not enough room for the gas to dissipate from wind and other factors.
    • Lava rock allows propane to dissipate and is the safest choice for propane features.

We do have a collection of gas fire urns and tables that are approved for use with fire glass. This is because the burner pan is approximately 2 inches deep and there is no open space beneath it. These products are also offered with a preferred line of fire glass for use with propane.

Not sure how much fire glass you'll need for your natural gas burning feature? Try using our fire glass calculator to help you determine the exact amount! For more helpful information and decorating tips, check out this blog article!
