What Can I Decorate My Fire Feature With?

How to decorate your natural gas or propane fire bowl.Fire pit with decorative embellishments.Depending on your fuel type, you have options!

Gas burning fire pits and bowls offer so much enjoyment for you and your family. They provide warmth and ambiance for your entertainment space and serve as a favorite gathering spot for your guests. Many people prefer gas over wood because it is a cleaner and more efficient burning fuel. One of the advantages to having a gas fire pit or bowl in your outdoor living space is the option to make it extra beautiful with your choice of media.

Whether you have natural gas or propane, you'll need to select the appropriate embellishments for your feature:

  • Natural Gas: fire glass, lava rock, outdoor vented gas log sets, ceramic river rock and luxury stones

  • Propane: lava rock and outdoor vented gas log sets

As you can see, there are more options available if you choose to burn natural gas with your outdoor fire feature. This is because propane is heavier than natural gas and will sink to the bottom of your feature. Propane needs room (and oxygen) to circulate, and the pieces of fire glass and ceramic rocks will actually trap the gas at the bottom of your fire pit or bowl. This can lead to explosion, resulting in personal injury and property damage. Lava rock allows propane to dissipate because it is porous, lightweight, and larger in size.

Outdoor vented gas fire logs can be enjoyed in either a propane or natural gas feature.Gas is routed through the holes in the logs for a beautiful flame presentation. For the ultimate flame dispersion, increased life of your burner, and safety reasons, make sure you are installing your burner with the port holes pointed downward. The burner will need to be covered with volcanic ash or cinders from about 1 inch below the bottom of the burner to 1 to 2 inches above the top. Using lava rock or fire glass in place of the cinders or ash can lead to explosion (placing this media under the gas logs will restrict gas dispersion).

Not sure how much media you will need to make a stunning impression in your fire pit or bowl? Our fire glass calculator will determine exactly how much you will need. We recommend filling the bottom of your natural gas fire feature with lava rocks, and then topping it off with 1 to 2 inches of your choice of colored, reflective fire glass.
